Viaggio returns. Horizons, frontiers, generations

From May 30 to September 14, 2025 in Biella Piazzo, in the two historical complexes of Palazzo Ferrero and Palazzo Gromo Losa, and for the first time at the Sella Foundation, will be held the VI edition of "Travel. Horizons, Frontiers, Generations", a project by the Stilelibero Association. The Festival is proposed as a laboratory of ideas, an occasion for dialogue in which people and places are rediscovered through new perspectives, a meeting between travel and art with the aim of crossing social, geographical and cultural boundaries. The exhibition will open with the inaugural Festival, (30 May-1 June), three days of meetings and book presentations with journalists, writers, photographers, and will continue until September 14 with 14 exhibitions and photographic exhibitions hosted in the halls of Palazzo Ferrero and Gromo Losa Palace. An artistic "journey" that ranges from industrial archaeology to reflection on femininity, from the Rarámuri culture to historical memory, to the celebration of cultural diversity.

From Ethiopia to K2

Among the exhibitions, De Aethiopes generis humani varietate. Works by Stefano Faravelli is a story of the artist's journey to Ethiopia to discover the origins of man. An attempt to enclose between the pages of an album, the encounters made with men and women of that land, to offer, to an ideal spectator, the miracle of a journey from a standstill.

At the Sella Foundation will be held K2. A story more than 100 years long. On display photographs and videos by Pietro Sella, which tell the story of the CAI Biella expedition of 2024 70 years after the first ascent, compared with the images of Vittorio Sella of 1909 in the first attempt to climb with the Duke of the Abruzzi and those of the 1954 expedition successfully led by Ardito Desio. The comparison highlights the significant differences in the glaciers over the course of over a century.

Tribute to Giorgio Cigna

Biella Piazzo’s spaces will also be the setting for the exhibition Viaggio nelle neo-avanguardie by Giorgio Cigna, a journey to discover the painting and sculpture of the artist from Biella twenty years after his death. A journey through multiple materials, techniques, adherence to groups and movements to celebrate his early experimental vocation. At the Spazio Cultura of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Biella, engravings and drawings will complete the narrative story, edited by Irene Finiguerra.

Protagonist of Biella in the clouds. Among castles, villages and flavors, instead, a cartoon, in a journey accompanied (albeit virtually) by Quintino Sella. After the success of the first two volumes, dedicated respectively to the city of Biella and the nature of Biella, the third chapter of the trilogy is presented. In this new story we explore villages, castles and flavors of the territory, thus completing a fundamental storytelling to deepen the knowledge of Biella. A project by Stilelibero, Creative Comics and Comune di Biella.

Two Chinese photographers in the Biellese

There are also many photo exhibitions to visit. Inspired by traditional Chinese landscape painting and oriental landscape photography by photographer Ye Wenlong, the focus of the exhibition is Between aesthetics and nature. His evocative and meditative works portray nature as a continuum, allowing the gaze and mind to travel from earth to heaven, touching a spiritual and metaphorical realm.

The Chinese photographer Jin Ting, on the other hand, in the exhibition Remains of industrial archaeology, highlights how small discarded objects in everyday life and remnants of the industrial era can acquire new meaning through photography, revealing an aesthetic strength that combines function and craftsmanship.

The two exhibitions are the result of an artist’s residence lasting two weeks in the five mountain valleys of Biellese, held last September 2024 and are designed specifically for this seventh edition of the Journey.

Photography as a physical and metaphysical interpretation

Other exhibitions on the programme include Mikelle Standbridge - Photo Bodies, a series of images dedicated to the female body and what physicality can reveal or hide. In Concrete Metaphysics. Photographs by Giovanni Maria Sacco photography becomes the means to reveal a long process of reflection and metaphysical interpretation, projecting one’s own mental space on the world and creating visual "metaphors". For the fourth year in a row, however, the Fotoclub of Biella faces, together with its members, the narrative of the traveling spirit of its photographers with an eight-handed collective, indeed eight eyes, with the exhibition 4x10. Forty photographs entrusted to four authors, who tell the world through their sensitivity. Ni más alto, ni más bajo is the title of Mauro Parmesani’s exhibition that recounts his trip to Mexico in the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara, the meeting with the Rarámuri people and their lifestyle deeply rooted in balance with nature. The concept of travel in a deeply symbolic and personal dimension is explored by the artist Roberta Toscano with the installation Essere in valigia, old suitcases transformed into optical tables that hold reworked digital photographs inside.

From Africa to India

The shots by Michele Falco, Paolo Falco, Edoardo Bernascone, instead, document, in the exhibition In barca da Zanzibar a Kilwa Masoko, the regatta of traditional ngalawa boats. The challenge combines team spirit and artisanal ingenuity in the suggestive setting of the ocean off the coast of Africa. Among the exhibitions also A doctor in the Belgian Congo at the beginning of the 20th century. Photographs by Felice Tabacco, a tribute to Felice Tabacco, a doctor from Cuneo, who resided in the Belgian Congo from 1920 to 1939, where he served as a doctor on behalf of the Crown. Finally, the exhibition India in posa. Photographs by Giovanna Aryafara, a unique look at human diversity, fueled by the passion for sharing and celebrating the cultures of the world.
