From 6 December 2024 to 18 May 2025
It is to the spirit of the Mountain, to its sacredness, to its landscapes as well as to that of its inhabitants, that Steve McCurry is dedicated. Uplands&Icons, the new major exhibition that we will host from December 6th 2024 to May 18th 2025, also at Palazzo Ferrero.
An exhibition, curated by Biba Giacchetti, which retraces McCurry's travels in the high lands, from Afghanistan to Tibet, from Mongolia to Japan, from Brazil to Burma and then the Philippines, Morocco, Yemen; over 100 images ranging from his first Afghan missions to the most recent stages of his tireless exploration of the world, such as Mongolia and Antarctica. A "listenable" story, in the audio guide available to the public, which is made up of boundless landscapes, marked faces animated by intense gazes, cultivations extorted from the land, symbiosis between peoples and animals which sometimes take on decisive roles to guarantee the human survival.
The undisputed essence of the Uplands dominates everything, with their extreme charm, the dilated time, the silence, a lifestyle that oscillates between danger and resource in places distant by geography, united by a breathtaking beauty that today more than ever wants to be the starting point for a reflection that McCurry never stops pursuing in his photography: respect for what surrounds us, for the still uncontaminated nature, and for the people of the mountains, the few still able to live among its rules, albeit harsh, by tempering or perhaps by a sort of immanent superiority.
The part of the exhibition set up at Palazzo Ferrero is then dedicated to his best-known and most representative photos, his Icons, with extraordinary images, including the famous portrait of the Afghan girl with green eyes, taken in 1984 in a refugee camp in Peshawar, which portrays Sharbat Gula. The photo that has become a global symbol of the condition of refugees is striking for the intense and penetrating gaze of the young woman, to whom McCurry never lacked support, helping her and her family to escape from Afghanistan in 2021.
A section enriched by extensive biographical documentation and a series of videos in which McCurry recounts in first person the maxims that underlie his extraordinary career as a photographer.
The exhibition, organized by the Cassa di Risparmio di Biella Foundation, Palazzo Gromo Losa srl, Creation (with Rjma as design partner and Promos as communication partner) in collaboration with the Municipality of Biella, Unesco Creative City, Cultural Center of Biella Piazzo and Palazzo Ferrero, thanks to the support of Banca di Asti, from a project by Orion57, is enriched by a free audio guide available to all visitors in Italian and English and by a catalogue, created exclusively for the Biella exhibition.
